Public PLN – Balancing PLN, Media Literacy, & Public Discourse

How do notable individuals use social media?

Notable individuals use social media to prompt themselves and generate a reputation because social media is one way to communicate with their followers or fans. However, the majority of the celebrities’ social media accounts are run by agents or media companies. Therefore, social media is an advertisement for notable individuals. For instance, they use social media to prompt upcoming interviews and events.

What are the benefits of being in the public eye and having a PLN?

The benefits of being in the public eye and having a personal learning network are that they share information or knowledge online and allow people to share their thoughts, so people can learn from each other without meeting each other. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, moving from a traditional classroom to an online class is one example of having a PLN, and some instructors will post a pre-recorded online lecture or lecture video in the public domain on YouTube.

Delivering information in a connected society requires verifiable resources, how do build a PLN to rely on?

Finding reliable resources is essential in the current era due to the freedom of the internet allowing everyone to post anything they want. Sometimes inaccurate or half-true information can go viral on the internet. Therefore, building a verifiable personal learning network is important and it relies on certified publishers and must follow the academic guidelines like including proper citation, so the reader knows the resources used in the article are credible.

How do those, who are veteran storytellers, minimize the risk of sharing misinformation?

Using reliable resources to prove and support your story is the most important way to minimise the risk of sharing misinformation because it uses images and videos that were captured during the events to prove the reality of the story and information creditability. Another important step to avoid sharing misinformation is proofreading by people from different cultural backgrounds and languages. This is because translation software can not translate the real meaning based on context, so it can lead to misunderstanding.

Hi Tim, I love reading your blog, I think your blog is very clear. You mention that the public figure on using their PLN is purpose on promoting their inquiries. And sometime their social medias are ran by their agent or others. I think when they consider themselves as business products, and the advertisement of themselves. Also, the verifiable resources should always be original, arguable, and traceable. And it is important to follow the internet regulations so that the internet environment is safe and trustable.

I agree with you. The current internet environment is all over the place, which contains too many unreliable resources. For instance, bias in news and social media can be one factor that causes misinformation for readers.

Hey Tim, nice blog. Your header picture of Elon Musk captures the point of the blog terrifically. When you mention that inaccurate half true information can go viral, I think Elon is a perfect example of utilizing half truths and inaccuracy to elevate his own platform, and benefit himself. An example would be him manipulating Tesla’s stock price through his utilization of twitter. Although an admirable guy in many ways, I’m curious if you feel the same or have other thoughts on the matter. Great job!
